April Newsletter

What’s been happening recently and what’s coming up?

As usual January and February have been fairly quiet as we all count the pennies after the festive period and choose to stay at home instead of venturing out into the dark often wet winter evenings.

Having said that, Bezza got things moving as he provided the music and fun as our mothers (and some fathers and children) celebrated Mother’s Day.

On 6th April we welcome a tribute band UB40 Homegrown to the Club. Whether your favourite tipple is “Red Red Wine”, or you’ve been to “Kingston Town” recently where you reassured your “Lonely Girl” or “Homely Girl” that “I Got You Babe” this is a night for you. Tickets are on sale behind the bar and are selling fast. As we hopefully see the weather improving, we are planning  our well established Frank Buckley tournament, introducing a new eleven a side football competition in memory of our former president Dave Holmes who sadly passed away last year and our annual bowling away day, this year to Owley Wood in Northwich. More about these events in the next newsletter or on the noticeboard in the Members lounge.

Sports section update

Well done to our Rugby team. After a challenging season, our Rugby Team is looking forward to playing in the Lancashire Cup final on 4th May at either Leigh or Wigan.

Our open age football team goes from strength to strength. They are on the verge of promotion to the first division and made it through to the Manchester Cup final on Friday 15th March.  Sadly they were beaten two nil by Corinthians but huge congratulations for getting to the final. And the team will compete in a Holts Brewery charity competition in May 2024. For further details watch out on the football page

And after a short indoor bowling season, our Crown Green Bowlers are looking forward to the start of the next Crown Green bowling season in April.

If you want to come along and support any of our teams, feel free to join us. Football and Rugby home matches are on the De La Salle fields on Wilton/Lancaster Road and bowling home matches are played on the green on King Street on Irlam of the Height.

Improving facilities

In the last newsletter we told you about plans for a new beer cellar and the positive impact this should have on beer temperatures etc. We have been working hard to clear space for this on the land behind the Club and are ready to accept delivery of the unit once the ground dries out and the crane can deliver it without getting “bogged in”.

And the Beer Garden is moving closer to a reality. The snooker table has been moved a little and the entrance to the Beer Garden has started and will be knocked through soon.

Outdoor advertising

You will have seen the adverts attached to the fencing around the fields. We will be inviting those companies who currently advertise, to renew their adverts. And by rearranging the adverts we can create more space. So if you know of any local businesses that would like to advertise their goods and services (at a cost) they should get in touch with Andy on 07737851118

Promoting membership

If you live locally you are likely to have received our new flyer through your letterbox promoting the Club and inviting membership. The Club is located at the heart of the local community and we want local residents to feel that they can enjoy using our facilities. So if you see new members in the Club please extend them a friendly De La Salle welcome.
