De La Salle Sports & Social Club news

November edition

Annual General Meeting 2022:

It’s that time of the year when we reflect on the last year and prepare for the next. The AGM will be held in the function room on 24th November 2022 starting at 8.00pm. This is a chance to hear from our Chairman, receive the accounts from our external auditors and appoint the committee for the coming year. There will be a vacancy of Treasurer as Sue Crook is standing down from this position after many years of managing Club finances and of course it’s a chance to make other changes to the membership of the committee. So if you have the skills to take on the role of Treasurer and would like the opportunity or you want to play an active role in the running of the Club by joining the Committee then please add your name to the nominations sheet that is posted on the noticeboard in the lounge.

Dates for your diaries until the end of 2022:

In November 2022 De La Salle Sports and Social Club celebrates its 50th anniversary since moving in 1972 from Radcliffe Park Road to its current location on Lancaster Road. We had planned to mark this Club milestone with a disco and hotpot supper on 18th November. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we need to postpone this evening – watch this space for a rearranged celebration in the New Year.

On 18th December in the afternoon we have a Children’s Christmas Party with disco, games and fun and a hotly awaited visit by Santa. The fun lasts for 4 hours from 1.00pm   This is a members only event and children (under 10 years old) must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are free – and admission is ticket only. Watch out for a poster in the club soon for details of when and where you can get your tickets.

On Boxing Day “Stars in their Mince Pies” returns to the Club with Bezza hosting another evening of potential stars hoping to hit the big time. For details watch out for the poster in the club. Definitely not an evening to be missed.

On New Year’s Eve we have a family disco, This is a members only event with tickets – Adults £5 and Children £2 – maximum of 4 tickets per member.

Better broadband speed?

In the last newsletter we announced that we have increased broadband speed which would hopefully reduce interruptions to live sports streaming – well it’s fair to say we have had a few teething problems but hopefully these will soon be rectified. As we approach the Football World Cup here are some of the fixtures to watch out for – both premier league and world cup:

  • Sun 6th Nov – 2.00 Aston Villa V Man Utd
  • Sat 12th Nov – 12.30 – Man City V Brentford
  • Sun 13th Nov – 4.30 – Fulham V Man Utd
  • Mon 21st Nov – 7.00 – USA V Wales
  • Fri 25th Nov 5:30 – England V USA
  • Tues 29th Nov – 4:30 Wales V England

Update on recent events:

Sadly the Rugby Section’s Western Theme night was postponed. This will be rearranged as soon as possible subject to availability of the function room. Saturday 29th October was a sell-out event for our Halloween party. Another great evening. Having seen the energy on the night and fantastic costumes there can be no doubt that De La Salle members know how to enjoy themselves.

Sports section update:

Huge congratulations to Matthew Swift who fought off the opposition from other Swinton and Pendlebury bowling team’s top players to take the honour of Second Division Player of the Year. And October saw us enter a De La Salle team in the indoor bowling League.

Our Rugby Team is well placed at fourth in the league having won two and lost two games.

Our football teams continue to do well in their various age group leagues. And don’t forget if you come to support our teams playing at home on a Saturday, the club is open from 9.30 am where parents can purchase teas, coffees, soft drinks and snacks. A must as we move towards the cold and damp winter days And our guests from Barrow FC continue their good start to the season and are 5th in the league. But with several teams only a couple of points above them, the team could easily improve their league position with a few of good results.

What’s happening on the bar?

Madri has arrived and seems to be going down well. We will shortly be saying goodbye to Shipyard which will give us the opportunity to introduce some guest beers. As we all know, prices are increasing in the shops and our suppliers prices have fluctuated as well. We are working hard to minimise the impact on Members and one way to make sure you pay the cheapest price is to use your membership card when you pay at the bar so that you receive the Members discount. If you have lost your card ask at the bar and we can get you a replacement. Otherwise email Marilyn at delasallesportssocial@gmail.com to request a replacement.

Update on Club maintenance

Our planning application for the new fencing is progressing, having had the tree survey completed.

The overgrowth at the Orient Road end of the fields has been cleared. The remaining tree stumps will be cleared soon We are seeking quotes for the removal of the tree stump in the car park and once this is completed we can increase the car park capacity.
