De La Salle Sports & Social Club news – April 2023

What’s been happening so far this year?

After a quiet new year in January, the Club was rocking in February to the sounds on Tony Lewis with his fabulous tribute to Robbie Williams. Nobody left the Club disappointed and we hope to invite Tony back next year for another great performance.

With some special offers on drinks, the lounge draped in green and white and some great music from Ireland we entered into the spirit and celebrated St Patrick’s day on 17th March at De La Salle. Then two days later it was time for our mums to enjoy prosecco and some great Sunday afternoon music on Mother’s Day. With games, dance and karaoke this was one lively afternoon and evening.

What’s coming up?

On 23rd April we celebrate St George’s day with a cabaret afternoon enjoying some great songs by Bob Young, raffle and bingo. You can sing along, dance or just tap your feet to the beat. Ticket only event – £2 each with proceeds raised in aid of the Salford Heart Care and Parkinson charities. On 20th May – Elvis will be back in the building. Kirk returns by popular demand to entertain us with songs by the master himself. Tickets are £7 for members and £10 for non-members. They go on sale in the Club on 28th April.

Sad news:

We send condolences to Paul Rabitte and Barbara Knight – Paul was one of our first team rugby players for many years who sadly passed away after short illness. Barbara was a regular bowler for De La Salle and will be sadly missed.

Enjoy your snooker?

The snooker table in the lounge has been recovered and we have some new cues and rests. De La Salle has in the past had a good snooker team and we know that some members have expressed an interest in starting up a new team. If you are interested in playing, coaching or even managing the team then please put your name down on the sheet posted on the notice board in the lounge. Once we get enough interest we will get together to plan our return to snooker league and competitions.

Sports section update:

Our Rugby Team has reached the semi-final of the Lancashire Trophy – date for the match is yet to be decided

Our bowlers joined the Salford Indoor Bowling league this year and were joint winners of the Handicap Competition 2023, winners and fourth in the Fours competition. Players are looking forward to a return to crown green bowling in April.

Football section – This seasons development for De La Salle FC has been hugely successful.

Since late last summer the group has grown and grown. The group is headed by Under 9 manager Andy and goalkeeping coach Tim.

Their boundless enthusiasm has resulted in producing a fantastic 7 new teams who will be playing league football in September at under 7s. All teams are headed by a manager and a coach including for the very first time at De La Salle a development girls team headed up by Kristina. We will have the following teams: FC, Reds, Devils, Rangers, Celtic, Galaxy and not forgetting Divas – our girls. We can’t wait to watch the teams progress as they hone their skills on the pitch. Already we have the new intake of under 5s starting together with some parents who have already volunteered to take on teams for the 24/25 season. Definitely putting De La Salle FC and Salford on the map.

Along with the results, the Division Two outfit have been in sublime form in front of goal for the duration of the campaign, but notably in their last six games. Perhaps more impressively, De La Salle rank as the highest scoring side in all six divisions in the Manchester Football League, notching 95 goals, whilst averaging five goals a game in their 19 fixtures played so far.

We say goodbye to Barrow AFC:

Since June last year we have been joined by Barrow AFC who trained on our pitches and used our community room for team briefings etc. The Club has benefited well financially and the pitch condition has been much enhanced. At the end of May, Barrow AFC will move on to new training facilities and we wish them well in their league and competition ambitions.

Another addition to the bar:

We now have a new stout – Trailblazer on sale in the bar for an amazing discounted price of £3.50 when you use your members discount card. And don’t miss out on the special offers with your members discount card, 2 bottles of white, red or rose wine – without a members discount card £25.00 – with your members discount card £20. Two Jaeger bombs – without – £8.50 – with £5.90. And five bottles of Sol – without – £16.50 – with your card £12.50.

Outdoor defibrillator:

At last we have a defibrillator that can be accessed at any time. This is situated at the front of the building and is illuminated. Instructions for its use are on the defibrillator itself and include the phone number to call for assistance.
